New School Year!

Welcome to a new school year! 2011- 2012

What are we up to in art?
This year in art we are concentrating on fiber arts.  Your child will be creating beautiful batik prints, learning to stitch and sew, weaving with all sorts of materials and inventing wonderful puppet characters.  We will also be drawing, making collages, sculpting with wire and paper, tempera painting, water coloring, working with paper mache and creating with clay.  Along with each lesson we strive for a little art appreciation, aesthetic valuing and aesthetic perception.

New this year!
Just around Thanksgiving we will be having a long term guest teacher here in the art room, as my husband and I are expecting our first child.  Please welcome him or her and don’t hesitate to stop by and introduce yourself.  I will have more information on the new teacher posted on the blog when the time comes.

Who are we studying?
Each grade concentrates on two or three artists.
Kindergarten: Mary Cassatt & Joan Miro
1st- Paul Klee, Alexander Calder, Henri Rousseau
2nd- Henry Moore, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse
3rd- Winslow Homer, Vincent van Gogh, Red Grooms
4th- Victor Vasarely, Pieter Brueghel, Maria Martinez
5th- Georgia O’Keefe, Romare Bearden, Claus Oldenberg
6th- Leonardo Da Vinci, Pablo Picasso, Michelangelo Buonarroti

How is my student graded in art?
Student are not graded on how “good” their art is, rather I use a simple 4 point scale:
O            Helping
S+            Role Model
S-            Try
S            Not trying
N            Bothering
This is a very simplified scale; if you have further questions please just ask.
  • Kindergarten and Life Skills classes are not given art grades.
